The Laotian American Community of Fresno invites you to a special community information event and cultural workshop where you’ll learn about the beautiful tradition of Loi Karthong! Join our special guests, Vien & Lin, as they guide us in crafting traditional small floral floats and share the deep cultural significance behind this sacred practice.

What is Loi Karthong?

Loi Karthong is a cherished Lao ritual where handcrafted floats (made from banana leaves, flowers, candles, and incense) are released into rivers, lakes, or ponds. This act symbolizes:

  • Paying respect to the Naga (mythical water serpents) and water spirits, particularly those of the Mekong River, which sustains Lao life.
  • Letting go of negativity and past misfortunes
  • Bringing good fortune for the year ahead

What to Expect at the Workshop:

  • Cultural History: Discover the origins and spiritual meaning of Loi Karthong
  • Hands-On Crafting: Create your own traditional floral float with provided materials
  • Community Connection: Enjoy an evening of learning and cultural exchange

This Event is Free & Open to the Public!

Thanks to the generous support of The Measure P Grant, the Fresno Arts Council, and our community partners, this workshop is free for all attendees.
